Playing burnt VCD discs in Xbox DVD-ROM drive?

  • is it possible to play a vcd discs on the x-box? i know you can access the vcds on your pc via the network and play those, but what if you wanted to play a vcd you had burnt on a cd? i popped a cd with the vcd into the x-box hard drive, but it seems that the x-box is unable to detect the disc. is there anything i can do?

  • no, when we say samsung we refer to the dvd-rom drive, that's the dvd-reader, and not the (cd/dvd) media discs.
    non-samsung xbox drives can usually only read original xbox-games, pressed audio-cd's, plus burnt cd-rw and dvd-r/rw media.
    samsung xbox drives (at least the majority of them) can read all media non-samsung drives can read but also burnt cd-r media.

    by the way, what if you do have a samsung? i suppose that means it is the cd/dvd media?


  • a tip (actually is a forum rule!) always read the faq before posting, see http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/info_faq.htm#09q: can the dvd-rom that came with my xbox™ read cd-r media with audio, video or pics?
    a: if you got a samsung dvd-rom drive with your xbox™ then most likely yes. if you got a
    thomson or philips dvd-rom then most likely no, however some can read a few brands cd-r.
    (the only real way to find out if your dvd-rom can play cd-r's or not is try and see).
    ps! as most xbox dvd-roms are thomson or philips so many users install a pc dvd-rom.
    as i hope you realize this is a hardware issue and not a software problem, only solution is to physicaly replace you dvd-rom drive;
    1. buy a original xbox samsung dvd-rom drive on ebay, cost aprox $50.
    2. buy a pre-modded (flashed with xbox dvd-rom firmware and some soldering on it's pbc) pc samsung dvd-rom drive.
    3. buy a compatible pc samsung dvd-rom drive and mod it yourself.
    4. buy almost any onther dvd-rom drive, mod it and isnatll in xbox (note though that only above samsung drives can play original xbox games).

    5. (workaround only), do not use the internal dvd-rom drive and stream from a pc's dvd-rom drive over the network.
