Presents in Japan

January 6th, 2009
  • Hello,
I´ve read an article about how to give a present to your host, when you´re in japan. Now I have some quentions:
Why do you have to be alone with your host, when you give the present to him?
Why do you have to hand it on with both hands?
    Thank you for your answer.
    bye Luthien

  • I would say you should be alone with your host when you give him or her your present because if you're in front a bunch of other people they'll all want presents too! :-) Japanese are obsessed with gift giving -- when I go on any kind of trip with my girlfriend I can be assured that half our time will be spent finding ‚¨“yŽY (souvenirs) for her family, friends, coworkers, and just about everyone else she's ever met in her lifetime.

You should present your gift with two hands simply as a gesture of respect, much like when you hand a business card to someone or anything with some kind of value attached to it.
