XBMC as dasboard
January 7th, 2009
i tried using xbmc as dashboard instead of evodash using the xbmc tutorial:
-----------
place a copy of the xboxmediacenter.xml along with a copy of your default.xbe in c: root
(rename the default.xbe to something your bios will boot from!)
example: if you have xbmc installed to apps\xbmc on the xbox f:\ the tag will look like this:
----------
doing so i got the bootlog error msg: canīt find q:\languages\german\strings.xml - maybe more errors tom come after that one
so it looks like the
any clues?
thanx!
string to where u put ur all xbmc files. if you are using xbmc from c:\ and your all xbmc files in the c:\ root the change
and evox m8 is done with the evox8 tool by nghtshd (creator of xbtoool)
personally use 4981- actually working on changing the bios a bit so it comes up with xbmc instead of xbox- its not hard just get the flubber-text editor tool (posted on x-s yesterday) and follow the tutorial for making your own .x file
i have done it. i have 1.0 xbox and after much frustration i boot straight to xbmc which is the best app i have ever used (pc, mac, linux and xbox).
i hope i am allowed to detail how i did it, is it cool to post it here?
i will type it up in a text file. give me a few minutes..

yes please do, that way others can learn from your misstakes. that's the way this forum works, like a knownlege base :d
step 1: unpack the xbmc files to your desktop on your home pc. modify the xboxmediacenter.xml (rightclick- edit in windows xp/2k) and modify the heading for "home" to look like this:
step 2: move the contents of the folder to f:\apps\xbmc\ (use ftp or build an autoinstaller (i have created an autoinstaller program that runs similar to sleyers evox autoinstaller for xbmc. it can be downloaded on gnutella nightly. search: "iconyx_autoinstaller"))
step 3: rename the default.xbe to evoxdash.xbe and the xboxmediacenter.xml to the c:\ and delete the evox.ini. you can copy the evox dash and files to a folder called evox in the apps directory and if you want run it like a program from xbmc.
step 4: reboot. if it doesnt work go get my xbmc autoinstaller.
:fixed:
for some reason when i tried to set my bios to boot to a default.xbe (actually xbmcdash.xbe) i got that language error, i suspect the xbox somehow skipped the dash and tried to boot to evox, well the evox.ini had been moved to my f drive... so the system kind of flipped out and searched for files (and partitions) that do not exist. in your case and mine it looked for a "q:" drive. so i started over, the only diferance i can see was those spaces on the xml and the name of the dash.xbe.
ps: does anyone know of a decent bios editor? the one i have (xbtool_1.0.22) wigs out when i change the boot files.
i used the following combination of things.
1) used morden audio through 007 to gain ftp access through mxm
2) put xbmc on e drive (leave xbmc's default.xbe in the folder)
3) used ude (see xbox-scene) to create dash mod kudos to pedrospad on x-s. ude rocks. check out his threads
to summarize ude as many of you have probably gained ftp access:
depending on your version and bios (i have a 1.1, see xbox-scene to check your version by serial number-it's on the homepage under versions) you can easily perform this soft-mod.
you need the following:
phoenix bios loader (i got mine with the morden patch)
dashboard 4920
xbtool or another bios editor
bert_ate_ernie.xtf (font hack)
once you have these things it is a fairly simple process. i did my friends tonight in about 30 minutes (including xfer)
1) transfer xbmc to e:\. leave default.xbe in the native folder
2) places files from pbl into the root of e:\ since i already had pbl on my e-drive i copied the folder to my pc, then pulled the files out of the folder and put them into e:\
3) edit your 4967_67.bin in xbtool. use the "debug" method (see their docs, very easy to use) this is where you will tell the bios what prgram to load. the dvd-rom is the first (if you messup you can access xbox through gamesave hack). after disc, i put e:\xbmc\default.xbe. as long as no disc is in the drive, xbmc boots. i also turned my led red, you do what you want. when done editing, place in a folder on e: named bioses (e:\bioses). this folder and bios came with mordens.
4) rename the c:\xboxdash.xbe to c:\modxboxdash.xbe or something else
5) take the 4920 dashboard you downloaded and rename (c:\xodash\update.xbe) to c:\xboxdash.xbe in your xbox! (i copied all the files from the 4920 to my c:-you may not have to do that)
6) copy the bert_ate_ernie.xtf font to the root of c.
7) rename your fonts folder to f0nts (yes, that's a zero) and alte r the file extensions to .xtfxxx i think i used .xtfbat
once you have done these, reboot your box. what happens is the xbox loads the dash, looks for the fonts and is forced to load bert_ate_ernie because there are no other fonts (you changed the file extensions). b_ate_e and the 4920 dash tell the box to look to e:\default.xbe. this is the xbe from phoenix bios loader (you put it into the root of e). pbl loads 4967_67.bin from e:\bioses which tells xbox to load e:\xbmc\default.xbe. bam.
i am not an expert. this is how i did it and do not claim to be a master of mod. everything i know i got from the fellas at xbox-scene. i did not find a tutorial on there for exactly how to do this, in fact, everyone was calling me a dumbass for not using a program called nkpatcher or pbl mentoo. they may be much easier to use. if you have questions, i will answer if i can.
here are some screenshots of my ftp ans xbtool so you can compare your drive to mine, if you want.

A little something about you, the author. Nothing lengthy, just an overview.
