RC5 Codes, Non-MS Remote

January 6th, 2009
  • keymap.xml says "the remotecodes are the obcs (original button codes) in the rca 5 protocol" i assume its referring to the rc5 protocol, but that requires a system code (up to 32) and a command code (up to 64).

    i have a programmable remote (pronto) that can send rc5 signals. * i edited keymap.xml like this:

    * * *move up
    * * *3
    * * *dpadup
    * * *up
    * * *1

    but i've tried sending all possible combinations of system code with command code 1, and i'm getting nothing from the xbox. *

    also, i do have a dongle, but i'd rather use rc5 codes -- i have an rca remote that is interfering with the x-box remote, so it would be nice to turn off the x-box remote features and only use rc5!

    thanks for any help! *this app gets better every day.

  • hi jimbob:

    i see you are using a pronto. how are you programming it?

    the protocol the xbox receives is rca 5 - that is why your rca remote is interfering with it. *that is the only protocol that the xbox dongle can receive and decode, so there's nothing that can be done about that. *ofcourse, you could simply map all the buttons in xbmc to other obcs in the rca 5 code list, thus whatever things were clashing before with your rca remote would not clash with xbmc.

    assuming you can get the pronto to learn from your xbox remote, please learn the select key. this has obc 244. if you can then edit the code that it is sending from this key, so that you can change the obc, try changing it from 244 to 39. this is the back key. if this works, then you should be able to change it to whatever number you wish, and change the tags accordingly.

    cheers,
    jonathan

  • can someone update the link so i can download the ccf file

    edit: found it :) http://citkit.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcef...._01.zip (http://citkit.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/xbmc/rca-5-pronto-codes_01.zip)

  • uploaded.
    k, does this work with all pronto remotes or only specific models? please let us know before we publicly distribute it

  • jimbob:

    great - glad you got it working.

    please upload the .ccf file to:

    xbmc upload page (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.it/upload).

    that way we can get it hosted for those who wish to download it.

    cheers,
    jonathan

  • jimbob's ccf file can be downloaded from here (link) (http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/xbmc/rca-5-pronto-codes_01.zip), thanks jimbob (i did however not know what to put in the readme)

  • thanks for the response, but no luck. *i tried various combinations, including sending command codes 1 and 254 (with system codes 1-32) to the xbox, with "1" or "254" in the remotecodes field. *

    can you point me to a spec sheet or something that describes the rc5 input you are using? *

    i'd be happy to investigate it, troubleshoot it, and then post how i got it working.

  • ok, i got it working! *the trick is to use one of the ir utilities, such as what you can find over at www.remotecentral.com

    i have a phillips pronto remote, so i used the pronto utilities to decode the code. *as i had learned the code with my remote, i was aware of its format and was able to recreate all 255 codes.

    here's how i did it. *i downloaded prontoutil mod (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/files/rcfiles.cgi?area=pronto&db=other&br=utilities&dv=irprograms&md=prontoutilmod&fc=&kw=&st=&dt=&so=&pg=1&file=utilities/prontoutil-m1.zip) from remotecentral.

    using prontoutil, chose
    code type: rca-dss
    frequency: 0048
    translate frequency (turn off, leave unchecked)
    device code: 5

    this will then generate function codes 0-255 that correspond to 0-255 obcs for the xbox remote.

    it will also create a .csf file. *you can convert this .csf to a pronto .ccf file by using ccf tools (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/files/rcfiles.cgi?area=pronto&db=other&br=utilities&dv=ccfprograms&md=ccftools&fc=&kw=&st=&dt=&so=&pg=1&file=utilities/ccftools.zip) from remotecentral (use ccfcompiler after installing). *this generates a .ccf file that has all 255 remote codes in it.

    in keymap.xml, you can add the obc (or function number) to the tag and walla -- it works! *just like they said.

    my x-box remote conflict was with my ultimatetv remote. *if you have the same problem, i can tell you that i've checked all the obcs coming from the ultimatetv remote. *the utv remote does not send obcs in the following range: 187-222.

    if you want the .ccf file i generated, pm me and i'll e-mail it to you.

    later

  • try 255-code so 255-1=254 in this case.
    frodo

  • well, there are now several different types of pronto remotes. the .ccf file should work with the following remotes:
    pronto ts-1000, tsu2000, ru890, ru940 and prontopro tsu6000 & ru970, tsu3000,
    marantz rc9200, rc5200, rc5000i & rc5000
    onkyo usr-5rf
    yamaha rav-2000

    for other models of pronto (e.g., prontoneo & rc3200), i don't know if it will work. however, i think there is a way to cut & paste the ir codes into the software, take a look at www.remotecentral.com for insight.

  • thanks. sounds like rca 5 is different than rc5 -- that takes care of one of my issues. rca refers to the protocol. 5 is the device number.

    i saw your post on remotes over at x-box scene (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=st&f=41&t=118709)

    that explains more of what is going on. i've downloaded some various ir utils that decode the proper remote information (irutil ccfdecode). it looks like i'm on the right track.

    once i get it working (i suspect i will now). i'll post my findings tonight to help others with this same problem. if i make a working ccf file for the pronto, i'll post it too.

    thanks for the help.

    -jimbob

  • uploaded.

    now... what's up with that rewind/fastforward thing? :)
