Information about Milton Keynes?

January 7th, 2009
  • Appologies for the duplicate. I just did not get a proper answer,so hoping people will give answer this time...

I have been considering moving to London (from the North-West)but so many people have told me that it is expensive and most of your London's high-wages/salaries will be spent on housing costs.

So, as an alternative , l thought about Milton Keynes, because it's not part of London but independent city, hence I take it as it should not be as expensive as London and it is not too far to commute if l get a job in London.

lve been told that the city of Milton Keynes is a big place itself and economicaly rapidly developing.

    So, my questions are:
Is it a nice place to live? Is it relatively safe? Job opportunites, night life, shopping facilities etc Do you like living there?

Thank you very much for you time.

  • I don't (and never have) lived in Milton Keynes although I've visited and been past it a few times ... it's a very spread-out place with lots and lots of roundabouts ... it markets itself on being human-friendly, with housing in clusters surrounded by trees and canals and cycle-ways ... I think it's a nice enough place to live if you like that sort of thing ... they have a good shopping centre

any upside on lower housing costs are likely to be offset by the downside of the cost of commuting and the time it takes each day

if you decide to live outside of London my advice would be to figure out where you're working, look for the nearest rail terminal, then look where rail lines come from into that rail terminal ... if possible try to arrange it so that you're within walking distance of a rail terminal to your work place ... this will save you loads of money if you can avoid having to buy a zone 1,2 travelcard on top of your rail fare

personally I hate living more than half hour's travel away from my work place ... I live in London and although it's expensive it doesn't cost me much to get work (I work 10 minutes away and could walk it in half an hour if I could be bothered) ... I live in a fairly leafy part of London and there's lots of parks and open spaces nearby so I don't feel claustrophobic (this was not by accident but by design, when I first came to London I made sure I chose an area with greenery as I couldn't stand to be hemmed in by buildings all the time)
