Home Entertainment Center Recommendations

January 6th, 2009
  • What do you guys recommend? tv sizezs? dvd players? surround sound systems? etc

    What are your preferences?

  • 52 inch DLP TV, for starters.

  • Good thread, I've been wanting to do some looking into this kind of thing lately... even though it will be a while before I can afford anything like that, it's nice to know what to look for. Plus my mom might be looking into getting something like this soon (her only complaint is that there's nothing good on TV for them to watch with it, and they don't watch movies enough). Still, I'd like to be able to give some input when I'm home for the summer.

  • Pwalex - Keep an eye on CB...we may be able to help. :)

As for stuff to watch, she should look into DirecTV. They just announced over CES the largest rollout of HD content EVAH. 100 new HD channels are being added to the service, which will finally make it worth buying rather than just using an antenna.

  • It depends on budget. I don't recommend someone spend money they don't have. But get the best you can for the money.

Anything below 47" in a TV, don't bother with 1080p at all and 1080i is optional if you get a deal. LCD will be the best option for most people. I recommend rear projection LCD TV's with at the very least a 3,000:1 contrast ratio. Samsung makes very nice sets, and Sony has some good budget priced HD tv's. You can pick up a nice 55" 1080i set for around $2k nowadays.

For receivers I recommend Denon for the most part. They're a good mid range company.

Speakers I'd go with Klipsch, Harmon Kardon, or Bose. In that order.

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players are a waste of money. Get an upconverting DVD player, and as long as the receiver supports HDMI you'll be fine until we start downloading our HD movie content.
