Why is. . .

January 7th, 2009
  • . . . Eternal Sunshine in the comedy section at Blockbuster?

I'm confused as to how this movie is a comedy. I mean, it has it's humorous elements, but comedy?

  • For the same reason Back to the Future always is.

  • BTTF is a comedy like Lethal Weapon is a comedy.

  • Not true. My Blockbuster has an "Urban" section. It takes up half the store.

I'm not sure what that means, but who know Jay Z made so many movies.

  • Of those three, I put BTTF in comedy and ESOTSM in drama. And my original point was that I don't see how Sunshine is a comedy in any way shape or form. Even with those absurdly simple categories.

    I agree with that.

  • Yeah, I think they just stuck it there because it has Jim Carey... and Blockbuster has decided that there are only 4 genres in existence: Action, Drama, Comedy, and Family.

  • I realize that's part of it, and why BTTF is in Comedy. It's more comedy than action or drama.
    .
This demands a debate. I disagree.

Count up the number of scenes in BTTF specifically designed to make you laugh (whether they do or not). Now do the same with your average comedy.

BTTF is an adventure/sci-fi movie with humorous elements. It is not designed as a "laugh riot". The movie has just as many tense moments as it does comedic ones. Hell, might as well call it a thriller if you're going to call it a comedy. After all, you're really on the edge of your seat when Marty is racing against the clock!

I sincerely doubt the film was written with the aim of being a comedy. Compare it to a REAL comedy. Meet the Parents, anything. In a comedy the primary goal of the film is to make you laugh. Do you think that the primary goal of BTTF is to make you laugh?

Who are these people who sit down in BTTF and laugh their ass off?? It has some funny bits, and some quotable lines, but come on man. So does Indiana Jones. It's main purpose is not to be FUNNY... and by saying it is it kind of denigrates the whole movie.

  • It has Mel Gibson handcuffing himself to an indecisive suicide jumper and daring him to jump, which is hilarious to watch.

So yes, but it's still not a comedy.

Nothing funny about Doc Brown getting gunned down by Libiyans.

I agree with that. And it certainly has less than a true comedy film like, say, Ace Ventura (though I definitely laugh more at BTTF than Ventura). But it's still more comedy than drama or action.

Whoah, I definitely disagree with that. And I just saw it two days ago.

I sincerely doubt the film was written with the aim of being a comedy. Compare it to a REAL comedy.

    Agreed.

Do you think that the primary goal of BTTF is to make you laugh?

Nope. I don't think you maybe understand what I'm saying.

Who are these people who sit down in BTTF and laugh their ass off??
    Me. It's funny.

It's main purpose is not to be FUNNY... and by saying it is it kind of denigrates the whole movie.

I know it's not, and I never said that. I said it's more comedy than most other traditional categories (not all other traditional categories), it's more comedy than drama or action, and I specifically said that I would NOT categorize it as a comedy.

But it is definitely more comedy than ESOTM. Neither would I call a comedy, but I can see why BTTF would be called a comedy. I can't about ES.

  • I hate pigeon-holing.

  • NEr no it's not really written for laughs.

    It's an adventure movie.

It has laughs in it, the same way Indiana Jones or Star Wars does. But the main purpose of the movie is not to make you laugh.

    I guess you're to blame.

BTF? Oh come on, it has a LOT more laughs than Star Wars or Indian Jones. Most scenes have plenty of gags.

I wouldn't classify it as comedy, but I see it as a very viable classification. Eternal Sunshine doesn't really have gags.

  • I know it's not, and I never said that. I said it's more comedy than most other traditional categories (not all other traditional categories), it's more comedy than drama or action, and I specifically said that I would NOT categorize it as a comedy.

Just because it's not a drama or an action movie doesn't make it a comedy. If it did, then Alfred Hitchcock would be Cinema's foremost comedy director.

There are more than three movie categories ya know.

    That's why I said it's a sci-fi adventure movie.

  • BTTF is a comedy like Lethal Weapon is a comedy.

I haven't seen Lethal Weapon, but does it have scenes like the one with Marty in the space suit in his dad's room, or a character like Doc Brown?

  • It does have Sci-Fi. At least mine does. My point is, that would be closer.

  • Yeah, I think they just stuck it there because it has Jim Carey... and Blockbuster has decided that there are only 4 genres in existence: Action, Drama, Comedy, and Family.

I realize that's part of it, and why BTTF is in Comedy. It's more comedy than action or drama.

Eternal Sunshine seems like it belongs more in drama.

  • Wait, Back to the Future isn't comedy? I guess I might classify it more as Sci-Fi, but it's a mostly funny movie.

  • Hey! Guess what! Lethal Weapon was on the other night, so I watched it. I'll agree, Tay, it's about a comedy in the same way as BttF. Although, it doesn't have a Doc Brown or characters as goofy as Marty's parents or Biff. I'd say that's where the majority of the comedy in BttF comes from, how silly the characters are, not necessarily the situations or the dialogue.

No, it's not funny when Doc gets capped, but he's still funny.

Lethal Weapon's also got more action, so in the Blockbuster sense it fits there, but it would certainly belong in comedy more than Eternal Sunshine would.

    But yeah, good comparison, Tay.

  • In other news, I haven't seen this movie in a year. I'd forgotten how awesome it is.

  • BTTF is definitely not comedy. It's what Josh said. Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi with comedy elements.

As for Blockbuster, I haven't a clue what sections mine has, I don't think I've been in it for years.:lol Pretty sure it has more than 3 genre sections though.

  • It does have Sci-Fi. At least mine does. My point is, that would be closer.

Agreed, but mine doesn't have a Sci-Fi. I'm the same as Pwalex: Action, Comedy, Drama.

Of those three, I put BTTF in comedy and ESOTSM in drama. And my original point was that I don't see how Sunshine is a comedy in any way shape or form. Even with those absurdly simple categories.

  • I'll agree, Tay, it's about a comedy in the same way as BttF. Although, it doesn't have a Doc Brown or characters as goofy as Marty's parents or Biff.Correct, they didn't bring in Leo Getz until the second movie.

    Blockbuster doesn't have a sci-fi adventure section.
