  • Hi, Suzette ! Those silks look wonderful ! And you are listed. Type "Suzette's Collection" into Google, and there you are. A search through ninemsn.com.au shows up a link to you from baybrides.com, which appears to be broken Infonetware has a link direct to your site from bedlineninfo.com for a search under "Suzette's Collection" and two links for a search for "www.suzettescollection.com". Yahoo has similar results. Lycos has every page indexed when you search under "www.suzettescollection.com". but you do not show up on Altavista at all. So the search engines are finding you, and anyone who already knows your business name should be able to find your site. If you are a relatively new site, and have only recently submitted to the search engines, be patient, things should improve with time. There are however several reasons why your site might not be not showing up on a more generalised search such as "silk bed linen Australia". Your title tag - what appears on the green bar at the top of the page in Microsoft Explorer is the same on every page, and only says "Suzette's Collection". This should be different for each page and say what is to be found there. So: Home page: "Suzette's Collection - silk bed linen for sumptuous comfort." Deep blue page: "Silk bed linen in deep blue from Suzette's Collection." - and so on. The alt tags for your images all say "Click for Fullsize Printable Version." These can be used more effectively by describing the picture: "Photo of Deep Blue silk bed linen - click for full size printable version." This has the added advantage of assisting visually handicapped surfers who have web pages spoken aloud to them, as well as surfers with their graphic capabilities turned off. You are not using meta tags for keywords and descriptions. Not all search engines and indexes look at them, but for the ones that do they are a very useful tool. They go in the head section of the code and could read, for example: They should be different for each page, and accurately reflect what is on the page. Use a free tool such as Word Tracker to find out what search terms people are actually using to find bed linen, and emphasis those in your keywords. It may turn out more people search for "silk sheets" than "bed linen", for example. Word Tracker is at: http://www.wordtracker.com These same keywords should appear early in the text of each page. You could add a robots.txt file to your site if it does not already have one. This is a page which is read only by the automatic spider programmes that the search engine's use to "crawl" the web, and should include all your most important key words. Incidentally I notice that the pages with the close-up photographs are headed "Click on the photograph for an enlargement & to print it out" when in fact we are already looking at the enlargement and the photograph is not clickable. These images also have no alt tags at all, when these could include an attractive description of the product. If you have FTP access to your site yourself you could implement these changes yourself by editing the code in Wordpad and then uploading the changed files. Ask your web host for information on how to do this. Or go back to Light Web for their help. You may want to re-submit your site to the search engines and indexes once the changes are in place.
