My computer gets hot answer asap!!!!!!!?

January 8th, 2009
  • i have a laptop gateway m-series and i have a cooling pad by targus and my computer still gets hot whats wrong with it?

  • I use a board or hard platform to lay mine on just for that reason. In my manual that was one of the issues to make sure none of the vents were covered up. I used it just sitting on my bed but then realized once I started using my little board it quit.

  • All laptops get warm with use, but for heat there are really only a couple areas that generate much heat. The most obvious is the CPU. You have a fan dedicated to cooling that. Usually located in the left rear of the laptop, you should feel a slight air movement from a rear vent as a result. If you don't, you might have a bad CPU fan.

The other location that tends to warm is the battery, usually a sign that it is going bad.

I would recommend seeing if you can download a service manual from gateway and possibly contacting their help desk to walk through some basic tests with them. Some notebook manufactures have a section in the system bios that will tell you temperatures, but it isn't common.

  • The cooling pad that you have is known not to be good for cooling down laptops. They usually help overheat the laptop.

  • That could be normal, because a lot of computers, vent air like that. That could also mean something in your hardware might be heating up. Try getting a better fan.

  • Nothing. It's just the laptop get's warm quickly. It mean just be the cooling fan is not powerful enough.
