Uninstall Issues

January 8th, 2009
  • I tried out McAffee's internet based virus scan and it detected I had some sort of back door trojan. I purchased and installed McAfee. All of my definitions are up to date and the McAffee full virus scan didn't detect it.

I decided to try out the Tauscan software. After a full system scan with Tauscan it also found nothing. Which leads me to believe I'm probably okay.

    Problem:

I don't like processes running on startup. I tried to disable Tauscan from starting on windows startup but the program just wouldn't. It works if I disable it from Msconfig but the Msconfig window starts up every time window starts if I do selective startup.

I decided to try and uninstall/reinstall Tauscan. After uninstalling it, I can no longer open any of the applets in my Control Panel. Sound strange to you? Advice?

I'm sure your probably going to tell me its some Microshaft issue. It always is isn't it? Its just odd it happened after I uninstalled your software.

I run Windows XP Home Edition on a new Dell Computer.

Any advice, other than reformatting would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Windows Shell Common Dll is the thing the Control Panel Applets are set to open with. A control panel applet is: Add/Remove Programs, System, etc.

When I double-click it, or right-click --> open, nothing happens now.

Thanks for looking into this for me.

  • Kiki, was the problem solved?

I do not think that your problem is related to Tauscan. It looks like system glitch.

  • Can you clarify what you mean by can't open your control panel applets. Do you mean you click on them or do you mean you click on one and Windows pops up the open with dialog? You can check by: Opening Windows Explorer Open the Tools Menu and choose Folder Options Click on File Types Tab Scroll down to Control Panel Extension and check to see what it is associated with (see screenshot). Make sure it is not Tuscan.I do not know the proper one for XP but I will check when I get home. Hopefully someone will come along before and answer that for us.
