The epitome of U.S.A. manliness used to John Wayne, can you think of someone who has taken his place?

January 8th, 2009
  • John Wayne, and the characters he portrayed, personified the U.S. gender roles for men (individualism, ruggedness, self-sufficiency). What other traits did he personify? Who has taken his place? What woman can be said to embody the ideal of the U.S.A. now? In the past?

  • Well, a quick google search found a list of the 10 manliest men in acting. Among the tops.....Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Kurt Russel.

But also, I think there were some more modern actors left off of the list. Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Sly Stallone.

  • societys progressed alot now and rather than having just the one type of person/character who personifies us gender roles, we've got a whole heap of ppl to pick from !
Id say madonna for for the present. She embodies that female empowerment/do anything kind of almost feminist attitude that lots of females posses.
As for males, its a lot mroe complicated and varied because withing society and off the screen there is such a diverse group of ppl.

  • Thanks goodness society has progressed beyond this point.

John Wayne another trait that he personified? Masculinity, redneck and cowboy.

What woman embody the ideal of the USA? No one does this. Our culture is to diverse that no one woman embodies he idea of the USA.

  • as far as i'm concerned it's still the duke, but in a more modern era george clooney, and mark harmon come to mind(strong, intelligent, sensitive). just a thought.

  • Wonder Woman

  • The epitome of manliness, was he?

Does that include dressing up in women's clothing?

Don't idolize anyone, instead look to yourself and measure by your own standards. Icons are flawed, just like us all.
