What was the school system in England during the 1600 and 1700's?

January 8th, 2009
There were public schools in England during that period - but in England, public school means schools that charge a fee for the students.
Private schools are independent schools that aren't governed by any regulation - anyone could start a private school.
Families who could afford it, had tutors for their children during their earlier years, then shipped them off to boarding school for the equivalent to high school, and then they went to university.
There was very little schooling for those would couldn't afford this system and there was a high rate of illiteracy.
