MP3: Can the MP Stand for Music Profits?

January 8th, 2009
Cantametrix, a Seattle-based company, is finally going to be able to put its digital identification and reporting technology to the test.

Although, Cantametrix has already beta tested its technology with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)and with such companies as mp3.com, London-based Wippit has just become its first real client.

Wippit, an MP3 file sharing service, is the first subscription based peer-to-peer service to implement Cantametrix's MusicDNA technology.

Currently in the most popular file sharing systems, a significant number of the song files cannot be shared because they are inaccurately labeled and therefore never appear on the central directory. In those cases where they can be recognized the text is garbled.

That is where Cantametrix's MusicDNA comes in. It replaces all of the metadata so that a music fan receives the correct song, the complete song and accurate textual information. Furthermore, MusicDNA will enable holders to identify their content usage across all forms of networks and operating platforms, to insure that ownership and royalty rights are fully accounted for and reported.

Unlike other P2P services and free MP3 distribution sites available, Wippit plans on using the new technology to do something quite revolutionary: Turn lost revenues for record companies into benefits for all concerned.

According to Wippit Founder Paul Myers, every recording currently downloaded using a peer to peer service brings not a penny in revenue to the recording industry, and Wippit is ensuring that this trend is reversed.

"If music fans want ed material, they can get it for free anytime they want in a variety of places. At least if they find it with Wippit we know that the owners of that material will be reimbursed because not only can we correctly identify each recording, we have a viable system to ensure that a payment is made," says Myers.

Back in Bellevue, Cantametrix (www.cantametrix.com) CEO Bill Koenig, whose company's product has been in development for the past 9 months, is pleased that he will now be able to showcase the technology. "Paul Myers is a true Internet pioneer and Wippit is the perfect vehicle to showcase the Cantametrix technologies," says Koenig.

And the timing couldn't be better. With MP3 file sharing at the top of the news these days with Napster's court case, Cantametrix's solution is getting quite a lot of attention.

The company is currently in discussions with three of the top music publishers in the world and is receiving inquiries from music publishers throughout Europe and Scandinavia.
