What does a healthy baby sulcata tortoise plastron look like?

January 8th, 2009
  • the plastron is the bottim shell right? cuz thats what im looking for. when theyre a baby like 2 months their shell is still soft. my sulcatas plastron has some indents but is it because his shell isnt hardened? also the part where the scutes on the bottom touch, kinda stick out a little. so it is like the scutes are concave. i was just wondering cuz usually i see tortoises with copletely flate plastrons. is it because they wear it down after time?

i am feeding my little guy orchard hay and a very small piece of mustard greens every day. is this diet ok? please dont get mad at me and say i should learn how to take care of him other wise why would i ask?

can you please show me a picture of a healthy 2 month sulcata pladtron?

  • When sulcata tortoises are hatched, they are folded in half in the egg. They unfold and dig to the surface. The bottom of the shell might be a little lumpy and not that flat for a few months. As the sulcata grows, the shell will take form. Also with baby sulcatas, you have to keep them warm. I use 40 watt light bulbs for mine. They provide to right about of light and heat. Turn the light of at night. For the diet, I feed mine romaine, mustard green and mixed vegetables. I buy a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and give them a little each day on top of the greens. Their so cute to watch eat, each one has a favorite vegetable. lol. It will take a few years before they are ready to live outdoors. The sulcata tortoise does get big. Full grow, they are about 240 to 250 lbs. I have two that are over 200 lbs and 2 that are around 150 lbs. The rest are under 100 lbs. Extra care is needed for the sulcatas. They are native from africa so they need warm tempatures. When outdoors they need heated houses when the outside tempature reaches below 55 degrees.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me.

Go here for some pictures of my sulcatas. Their adults in the pictures.
