Diabetes websites Best answer on the web

  • The last time I checked on google, there were 6 million pages using the word 'diabetic.' I'd like to know roughly what types of sites comprise this enourmous amounts of entries. Are they 'official' -- run by registered organisations, or 'private' run by interested individuals. How many offer retailing -- can you buy products from many of these sites. Also, in terms of which sites are most visited, are there statistics available? Basically, I'm looking for a guide as to what's 'out there' on the web today, and of what is out there, what's the best/most comprehensive. thanks.

  • Dear SueMarshall,

I have enjoyed researching your question. You are correct that there is an immense amount of “information” that comes up when using the key word “diabetes.”
    I found:

    1,450,000 results using “diabetic”
    6,180,000 results using “diabetes”

I began my research by visiting Rick Mendosa’s diabetes directory. Mendosa has catalogued diabetes resources for several years and contributes his research to the American Diabetes Association. http://www.mendosa.com/diabetes.htm

The following site is Mendosa’s article on the top ten diabetes sites http://www.mendosa.com/amiratop10.htm

Though there are no trustworthy statistics specific to most visited diabetes websites, Mendosa also wrote an article titled “Diabetes Searches with Google” that appears on the American Diabetes Association website. According to this article:
“Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. This means the first pages that Google returns are usually the best ones on that subject” (Mendosa, 2002). http://www.diabetes.org/main/community/info_news/web/default.jsp

I based my own categorization of sites roughly on Mendosa’s then did my own searches. Obviously there is some degree of overlap. For example, some non-profit and company sites also show up under a search for diabetes research sites. I have included example sites under each category heading. I have listed the categories from the greatest number of search results to the least

    Search strategy:
To find government sites: “diabetes” “government”
I used Uncle Sam and keyword “diabetes” to find U.S. government sites (the majority)
To find retail sites: “Diabetes” “order”
Then I refined according to particular products such as: “insulin” and “glucose Monitors”
To find Organizations: “Diabetes” “organizations” then clicked on similar pages on the ADA link
    To find Charities: “Diabetes” “non-profit”

To find Personal Pages: “Diabetes” “Pages”

To find Hospitals: “diabetes” and “hospitals” then hit similar pages on hospital links
To find Research: “diabetes” and “research” then looked at similar pages
To find software: “diabetes” and “software” then looked at similar pages
I hope you find this helpful. If anything is unclear please request a clarification and allow me to respond before rating this question.
    Regards,
